The Athena Cinema opened its doors in 1915, making it one of the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in Ohio. What began as a vaudeville and silent film house on Court Street has become one of Southeast Ohio's most beloved cultural landmarks.
For over a century, the Athena has shown everything from silent-era classics to experimental short films. We show first-run independent films, foreign language features, and classic revivals — all on a single, beautifully maintained screen.
We are a nonprofit, sustained by memberships, ticket sales, and the belief that cinema belongs to everyone. The Athena is owned by the community it serves.
Membership keeps independent cinema alive in Athens. Members get great perks and the knowledge that they're sustaining something irreplaceable.
Opens 30 minutes before first showing. Tickets also available online. Members always save.
